Your First Night With Your New Puppy
There are few feelings that can equal introducing a new puppy to the household. Everyone will experience feelings of anticipation and excitement. There may be some feelings of nervousness, even on the part of the puppy! This article should help you past the most common hurtle of getting it housebroken. Start by "puppy-proofing" one area of your home. This can be the garage, kitchen, a spare bedroom, or even a bathroom if it's large enough. Clear out any potential hazards at puppy level, such as electric cords, plants, magazines, candles, baskets and ornaments and such. A baby gate or half-door will come in handy to confining the puppy to this area for the first few weeks. This will keep it from getting overwhelmed with roaming the entire house. Lacking a separate space, a crate or pen can be used. This isn't about keeping the animal caged - this is about giving it its own space where the rules are simpler. You can still get it out and into the rest of the house for playtime, but the newspaper-lined space of his own will be necessary for training. You should remember that a puppy is still an animal no matter how much you want him to be part of your family. While he has a bit of intelligence, you will need to help him adapt to life at your home. You can work with his puppy-level psychology to your benefit - for instance, encouraging his to think of himself as part of your family's "pack". Your separate area for the puppy should ideally be near where the rest of your family sleeps. Puppies don't automatically go to sleep at night and wake up in the daytime just because humans do - the first few nights it will probably fuss and whine a little. Don't worry; after a few days it will adjust to its new life. Sometimes it is helpful to keep his crate or bed next to yours, so that as you sleep, your hand can dangle down next to him. That's why puppies whine at night; they're lonely. They're used to sleeping in a pile with their litter mates. Sometimes a stuffed animal or a hot water bottle next to the puppy will serve as surrogate litter-mates.
